THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: Finding Your New Tribe
Amazing Moms-To-Be,

I am thinking of the great value I get from my fellow mothers. I am talking about the women I have met since I had my little boy - whether from my brand new mommy days or more recently through meeting mothers at Matt's preschool.  These women are a constant source of support, information and friendship. I couldn't do it without these women!

Birthing ClassEvery mother needs support, but it is especially vital as you prepare for a new baby and in the first year as a new mother. This week's topic is Finding Your New TribeScroll down to Your Coaching Moment to consider  how you might create a vital network as a new mother.

All the best from your coach,
Amy

A few folks from my tribe after Matt was born!

YOUR COACHING Moment

Finding Your New Tribe

One of my top five tips for moms-to-be and brand new mothers is to actively find your new tribe. I'm talking about all of your fellow moms-to-be and soon, fellow new mothers.

No one else can understand you quite like another mother experiencing what you are experiencing. I will never forget my first meeting with a local group called PEP (Postpartum Education for Parents). It is a volunteer organized association that gathers up new moms and sets up a support group that meets once a week. I showed up with my little guy Matthew when he was about 5 weeks old. I immediately felt like I belonged as I looked around at 20 other mothers with sleeping, crying, pooping, nursing babies. We talked, shared and laughed.

It was one of the THE best things I did for myself as a new mother.

As a new mother, you will NEED support. You will need understanding. You will need to know that you are not alone, that everything you feel is normal and that you will grow and learn as quickly as your baby. It doesn't matter where or how you find your tribe, just that you do. Here are a few ideas from some of our mothers:

  • Start a group with the women from your childbirth class
  • Check out national or local organizations like MOMS Club (momsclub.org), Mama Source (mamasource.com) or The Mommies Network (mommiesnetwork.org)
  • Explore virtual groups on the Internet like Cafe Mom (cafemom.com)
  • Make a list of moms you can call with questions or just to vent - you will want to have new moms as well as women with kids a bit older than yours
  • Go ahead and reach out to a mom-to-be or new mom that you see at the grocery store or coffee shop
The most important thing is to be proactive. Start finding your tribe now - create your own mommy network to help  support and sustain you for years to come. It's one of the smartest investments you will make as a mother. The sisterhood of motherhood is one of your most important resources!

COACH YOURSELF: Commit to finding your tribe now! Start exploring what might work for you & make sure that you meet with other new mothers soon after your baby arrives.
