THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: How Will You Be?
Beautiful Women!

One of my current challenges as a mother is being with my son's increasing "boy" energy - the tackling, climbing, punching and general desire to use his surpisingly strong body. My default is to be controlling, to tell him to be careful, slow down and be more gentle. He really can hurt people, including me and himself!

However, Matt is just doing what comes naturally to him - he absolutely loves being physical. The challenge is Matt climbinghow I choose to BE with that - do I really want to be controlling and constantly shut him down? Is this the best I have to offer? This newsletter is about considering how YOU will be with the many realities of new motherhood. Scroll down to Your Coaching Moment to start thinking and planning what will help you BE at your best.

All the best from your coach,
Amy
Founder, Empowered Motherhood

Matt has an enormous amount of energy!

YOUR COACHING Moment

How Will You Be?

There is so much to prepare for as a mom-to-be, it's easy to focus on the logistics - the doing. Today I want you to focus on the being for a moment. To look at who you are and what you know about yourself. And to get a sense of how you might be with different aspects of life as a new mother. All with the intent of planning ahead for what you need and can do to help BE your best.

Take out a piece of paper and jot down your thoughts to the following questions:
  • How are you with messy?
  • How do you react to a serious lack of sleep?
  • What are you like with an intense learning curve?
  • How are you with vulnerability and dependency?
  • How do you respond to crying - yours or someone else's?
  • How are you with asking for help?
Look at what you wrote down. Don't judge yourself and don't worry about anything. Just reflect.  What do you see? What did you learn about you? Are there any areas where you will need help and support to choose a different way of being than your default response?

Of course, you can't really know how you will be with your baby until you are with your baby! And these questions cover just a few parts of motherhood. But, they do get you thinking about what you might be like in the midst of your new life. Each woman is unique in how she responds to the marvelous and the mundane in motherhood. The point is to know yourself and recognize what you need to be who you want to be.

So it is with my challenge in being with my son's intense physical energy. Instead of being controlling, I would like to be more open and playful.  But I need help to get there! I ask my husband to remind me to slow down, breathe and give Matt space to be who he is. I write myself reminder notes. And I forgive myself and have patience as I continue to learn how to be Matt's mom.

COACH YOURSELF: I want you to pick an area that you think could be one of your challenges as a new mother. Think about how you WANT to be and what you can do ahead of time to get the help and support you need.
