| Stepping Back In most situations I tend to get involved. I am a participator! I like to put my two cents in and help find solutions. That can be a wonderful tendency as a life coach, but not always helpful in every day life. This past weekend I practiced going against type and stepping back in a few challenging situations. One situation was a family fight - my husband and his sister were acting like they were back in grade school and bickering like two little kids. Normally I would jump in and try to help make peace and try to explain one side to the other. Instead, I stayed out in the backyard, read my book and didn't even ask what the trouble was about. And they worked it out on their own. I think as mothers it's easy to get into the habit of managing, planning, fixing and commenting on everything around us. We wear many hats and our participation or involvement is often required. But, we are not always necessary. Sometimes it's a relief and a revelation to just step back and let things go their own way. Here are few examples of mothers who responded to my challenge of stepping back: "I have great difficulty letting my husband take care of our baby - I'm forever commenting and correcting what he is doing. I tried stepping back today. I still commented in my head, but the truth is there is value in his approach too even though it's different than mine." Alex "I turned in my resignation as treasurer for one of my volunteer organizations, effective in two months. The problem is that there is no one else stepping up yet! My usual response would be to feel obligated to stay on, but this time I am just letting everyone figure it out. I have done my part and I'm stepping back!" Joann "Two of my colleagues at work were upset with each other. This happens often and normally I play go between and help smooth things over. This time I told each one that they needed to work it out directly, face to face. Imagine! Expecting grownups to act like grownups." Kari COACH YOURSELF: Pick something to experiment with this week.
