| Wise Mothers! I'm constantly reminded that there are many ways to raise a child.
Every time I get set in "how it needs to be" something pushes out the
sides of my mothering box. This weekend, it was my father-in-law. My step-daughter graduated from high school and all of my husband's
family was in town to celebrate. There was an evening ceremony and
party afterwards - I was only planning to bring my two-year old, Matt,
to the ceremony since the party was after Matt's bedtime and I'm fairly
anal about his sleep. My father-in-law just looked at me and said, "Is
it going to kill him to go to bed late this one time?" All the best from your coach, Matt & his Grandpa this past weekend |

| There's More Than One Way You are a wonderful mother. You really do know best on most things. Your instincts and intuition are right on. Know that I KNOW how good you are. Now that you are properly acknowledged and validated, I want you to to take a look at stepping out of your own mothering box. Where you are holding on too tight as a mom? Where are you most rigid? Controlling? Where do you feel stuck or in a rut? What could use a little fresh thinking? We all need to remember that we don't have all the answers and that we can change what we are doing. For one mother, it is helping her son with homework. The past school year was filled with many a nighttime battle over homework. She is determined to do a bit of her own homework this summer and find some fun, new techniques to try this fall. For another mom, it is getting her kids to eat properly. She is old school and has her kids sit at the table until they finish. Meal times are often stressful at her house. This mother was struck by an unconventional friend's approach who lets her kids pick what they want to eat, but from a menu of healthy choices. She plans to try this approach for a week and see what the change brings. And for one new momma, it is her husband feeding their little baby. Whenever he gives their little girl a bottle, this mom tends to hover and comment on what he should be doing and exactly how he should do it. No surprise, neither mom, dad or baby is enjoying the experience much. She committed to backing off and letting her husband figure it out for himself. All of these mothers stepped up to create space for more than one way. As a mother, some things are non-negotiable while others can benefit from some new thinking. COACH YOURSELF: Take out a piece of paper and write down one area of your mothering that can benefit from fresh ideas. Commit to seeking out and trying a few new ways!
