Get ready to let go of half the stuff you are trying to do! Chances are you will never be able to do everything you feel compelled to put on your task list. The women I know who try to juggle it all, maintaining everything from their pre-baby life plus all the new roles and responsibilities associated with motherhood, usually end up stressed out, exhausted, and resentful. With good reason, it’s TOO much to do. If you want to be a mother without losing yourself, you need to let go of a huge chunk of what you are trying to do. It’s vital that you have the time, space and energy to BE there in your life. Time to learn about each stage of motherhood. Space to shift and change. Energy to see solutions not problems. You will not stay true to who you really are if you spend all your time working through a list of tasks a mile long. The sad thing is, it’s probably you who is putting the pressure and expectations on yourself. I am going to relieve the pressure right now. You have my permission to let go of half the stuff you are trying to do. Not only today, but in the future, when you get caught up in the busy-ness of your life and forget that it doesn’t need to be so hard. As one mom put it, “It’s remarkable how caught up in the doing I get. I always feel like there is no possible way I can cut my list. I think I secretly believe my value as a ‘mom’ comes from doing a lot, being really busy. And yet, every time I push to pare down my list, the rewards are immediate. My stress drops. The feeling that I can never catch up goes away. I slow down and start to really enjoy my life and my child again.” Lacey, mother of one COACH YOURSELF: Make a list of everything that’s on your plate right now and cross off half of it, just to see what it feels like. Think of it as an experiment. Take the perspective that you are letting go of some of your tasks “for now.” Live with and use the short list for one week. At the end of the week, notice how you feel, what was different in the past week, and if you really need to add back the tasks you cut.
