THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: The Secret to Being a Good Mother

I’m so glad to connect with you today!

I have huge admiration for my clients. I was talking with a few of them this week including a woman with a brand new baby, several mothers with toddlers, and one woman with three boys running around! All of them are PASSIONATE about their kids and motherhood.

Amy with MatthewThey are dedicated, thoughtful and earnest mothers. They really care about their children and their families. But, there was one thing I had to remind all of them this week - you need to channel some of that passion and thoughtfulness to taking care of yourself.

YOUR COACHING Moment

Remember that taking care of yourself has EVERYTHING to do with being a good mother.

As a mother, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that it is okay if you always come last. It isn’t. You need to be available for your children and your family; you need to be energized and whole; you need to feel fulfilled and complete so that you can give to the people you love.

We all know the oxygen mask example – adults need to put on their oxygen masks before they put on their own child’s. Take that in. If you do not take care of yourself, you cannot take care of those who depend on you.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are okay, that you are rested and healthy, that you are eating well, exercising, getting out, interacting with friends and loved ones, laughing and generally taking good care of yourself. This is the foundation you need to be a good mother and to sustain the long-term commitment that is motherhood.

As one of my clients commented, “I love passing this message on to new moms. It’s a lovely reminder that being a good mother doesn’t come from beating yourself up or self-sacrificing to the point of exhaustion or illness. We mothers are important! We have a huge job and need to give ourselves every opportunity to do it well.”

COACH YOURSELF: What is your “oxygen mask?” What are the things that keep you “breathing” so that you can take care of the ones you love? Narrow it down to the absolute essentials, then share them with those around you. Be sure you have everything you need to take care of yourself so that you can help take care of everyone else.
