THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: Real Mom Solutions!

Happy Mother’s Week!

I like to carry that Mother’s Day sense of entitlement and self-celebration right into the week. I’m still being nice to myself!

The last newsletter was about finding your catalyst. I had the pleasure of helping one of our readers find her catalyst. Rena was the first mom to email us with her greatest challenge: “Amy with MatthewI am currently struggling with my husband about the value of my work versus his. While he knows my work is no less important, he doesn't like it when I have to travel for a conference or work on the weekend! Help!

Scroll down to Your Coaching Moment to read about Rena’s catalyst and to continue to find your own.

All the best from your coach,

YOUR COACHING Moment

Below is the flow and outcome of Rena’s Catalyst coaching session. I hope it deepens your learning about how to find catalysts for your life.

What’s The Situation?
Rena recently went back to work after 6 years working at home with her kids (Lia 3 yrs and Allan 8 yrs old). Rena is in the midst of diving into an important role as a teacher and leader in her school and it’s not always easy for the family to adjust.

What Do You Want?
As Rena put it, “I really want everyone to be on board – both my husband and kids. I want to maintain the right balance and figure out how to have the family really be okay with my different roles – mother, wife, teacher, and leader.”

How Will You Know You Have It?
I asked Rena “How will you know you have the right balance and everyone is okay?” She described it in terms of behavior – what everyone is like when it’s NOT in balance. The kids are whiny and clingy. Her husband Andrew gets quiet, goes to the garage and doesn’t communicate. As for Rena, she knows she’s out of balance when she is trying to do everything, sleeping poorly and is really emotional.

What Are Your Values & Strengths?
We took a look at what Rena really values to give us some ideas of how to bring everyone into balance and create support for Rena’s expanded role beyond wife and mother. Rena talked about her love of equality, fairness, mutual support, growth, and team environments. She spoke about her strengths – a high level of awareness and sensitivity, communication and ability to follow through.

What Is Your Catalyst?
I reminded Rena that a catalyst is something that will have real impact. It is the one task, action or goal that will help everything else fall into place. Rena took her values and strengths and decided that her catalyst for balance and support is to start monthly partner and family meetings. Her idea is to clearly define individual and family goals – actually write them down and post them. The family will brainstorm together on specific ways to support each family member’s goals – whether it is Rena’s new job, Alan’s baseball, Andrew’s cycling or Lia’s hula dancing! It’s about coming together as a family to support each person’s individuality and interests.

How Will You Be Accountable?
Rena committed to talking to her husband this Saturday about the family meeting idea AND scheduling the first meeting by the following weekend!

COACH YOURSELF: Take yourself through a mini self-coaching session. Use the headings above from Rena’s session and apply it to yourself. See what kind of catalyst you come up with!
