THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: Drop The Limiting Beliefs

Good Mothers!

I spend a lot of time coaching my clients on their beliefs, because I believe they are fundamental to the way your life plays out. The difference between a limiting and empowering belief is quite literally the difference between a limited and a powerful life.

Amy with her son, MatthewThat’s why it’s so humbling when I hit my own limiting beliefs. I hit one this morning. I was lying awake at 5am, which always annoys me to not be sleeping when I actually could be sleeping. My first belief of the day was “I’m going to be exhausted all day.” Hmmph! This week I encourage you (and me) to drop the limiting beliefs. Scroll down to Your Coaching Moment to get started.

All the best from your coach,

YOUR COACHING Moment

Drop The Limiting Beliefs

Beliefs can push you forward or hold you back. As I explained to one client, working towards a goal with someone who has limiting beliefs is like putting one foot on the gas, and one foot on the brake. Picture that, feel what that would be like. Have you ever had that feeling? There is probably a limiting belief lurking.

So, let’s work on changing some of your limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs.

Step 1: Identify a belief that you want to change.
The way you figure out if you need to change a belief is to just ask yourself, “does this belief limit or empower me?” For example, let’s take my belief from this morning, “I’m going to be exhausted all day.” I’m pretty sure my belief is going to limit me, so on to the next step.

Step 2: Find some other beliefs.
Now you want to brainstorm and play with other beliefs. To help find some ideas, you can ask yourself, “What would I like to believe instead?” I came up with a few alternatives for my limiting belief including “I will find the energy I need” and “I will be energized by everything I do today.”

Step 3: Try them on.
The next step is to state each belief assertively. Say each one out loud to test it out. Notice when you feel limited and deflated, and when you feel expansive and energized. For me, the first alternative was decent, but the “I will be energized by everything I do today” felt terrific.

Step 4: Choose the belief that resonates for you.
Now you get to choose what to believe. You literally pick a belief that feels right for you, that empowers you. You keep working with the wording of your beliefs and trying them on until you’ve created the one that you can claim with conviction—the belief that will help you be the woman and mother you really want to be.

Choose your beliefs carefully. They make you who you are.

COACH YOURSELF: Pick an issue, problem or challenge that you are facing right now. I want you to feel around for the limiting belief that is lying underneath – the belief that has one foot on the brake. Use the steps above to practice choosing an empowering belief.
