THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: How to Be a Selfish Mother

Marvelous Mothers!

I often think that I’m a pretty selfish mother – I do take time for myself, I do put a lot of time and energy into a career that I’m passionate about and sometimes I sneak too much of Matt’s macaroni and cheese. I can beat myself up for being selfish, but the truth is that these are all things that help me stay “me” and in the end, bring my Amy with her son, Matthewvery best to motherhood.

Every mother is working a balance between selfless and selfish. Finding the perfect balance for your life brings enormous benefits for you and your family.  Scroll down to Your Coaching Moment to ensure you have enough selfish in your balance.

All the best from your coach,

YOUR COACHING Moment

How to Be a Selfish Mother

There are times when a mother needs to work on putting her kids first and there are times where it’s the other way around. There is a balance between selfless and selfish that creates self respect and respect for your children. A balance that creates stability and a foundation for the whole family.

Where do you fall on the spectrum between entirely selfless and completely selfish? How might you benefit from a bit of selfishness? How might your baby or kids benefit? Your husband or partner? What about your community or the world?

For those times when the scales tilt towards too selfless, here is a tip to help you balance it out:

Decide what is non-negotiable in your life and stop negotiating with yourself and others.

Sometimes you have to be firm as a mother – that includes being firm with yourself! You deserve and require certain things for your life that are absolutely necessary – you needn’t second-guess yourself nor let others question you.

What are important non-negotiables? Some are no-brainers – sleep, healthy food, water, a shower or a bath. Others depend entirely on the individual – one mother’s “must have” is time to play the piano. Another mom I work with requires shared cooking duty with her partner. Non-negotiables can range from a weekly coffee date with your best friend, to private time for journaling or just thinking, to a yearly vacation at the beach.

Only you can decide what are must-haves and then make no apologies or excuses about making it your priority.

COACH YOURSELF: Pick one non-negotiable this week. It might be something basic (exercise or a chance to sleep in), or it might be something that goes more to the heart of who you are. I want you to communicate it. Talk  to whoever is involved and let them know how important your non-negotiable is to you. Ask for their support in making it happen.
